Uterine Fibroids

                   Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are benign (noncancerous)

tumors of muscle tissue in the uterus.
They are also called myomas or leiomyoma.
Causes
It is believed  that uterine fibroids develop from a stem cell in the smooth muscular tissue of the uterus (myometrium).
A single cell divides repeatedly, eventually creating a firm, rubbery mass distinct from nearby tissue.
Hormones

Estrogen and progesterone, two hormones that stimulate development of the uterine lining during each menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy, appear to promote the growth of fibroids. Fibroids contain more estrogen and progesterone receptors than normal uterine muscle cells do. Fibroids tend to shrink after menopause due to a decrease in hormone production.
Symptoms
Many women who have fibroids don’t have any symptoms. In those that do, symptoms can be influenced by the location, size and number of fibroids.
In women who have symptoms, the most common symptoms of uterine fibroids include:

_ Heavy menstrual bleeding

_ Menstrual periods lasting more than a          week

_ Pelvic pressure or pain

_ Frequent urination

_ Difficulty emptying the bladder

_ Constipation

_ Backache or leg pains
There are 3 main types of fibroids based on location-

Subserosal _ outer wall of uterus (55%)

Intramural_ in muscular layer of uterine wall (40%)

Submucosal_ protrude into uterine cavity.(5%)
* Uterine fibroids and Infertility-
Most women with fibroids will not be infertile.

Fibroids causes Infertility only in certain ways-

Change in shape of cervix can affect the no of sperms that can enter uterus.
Fallopian tube can be blocked due to oversize and pressure of huge fibroid.

Blood flow to the uterine cavity may hamper which will decrease ability of embryo to stick ( implant) to the uterine wall or to develop.
Ayurveda
We can correlate it with Manmsaj Arbuda  and Raktaj Arbuda.
Treatment like Oral medication with nimb , Patol, kanchanar, khadirarishtha and with Panchkarma procedure like Basti and Uttarbasti  for upto 3.5cm fibroid .
Uterine myomectomy is the option mostly adopted and in certain cases it’s Hysterectomy i.e removal of Uterus.
