REVIEW OF AROGYAVARDHINI VATI

Rasaratna samuchchaya

Arogyavardhini vati is one of the herbo-mineral formulations explained in Rasa Ratna Samuchchaya. Rasa vagbhata explained this khalvirasayan in the context of Kushtha rogadhikara chapter no 28. At the end of the verses it is clear that this yoga is actually mentioned by Nagarjuna yogi. Even though there is lot of controversy about the time of nagarjuna,Reference about arogyavardhini vati may be considered prior to Rasaratna samuchchaya. But it is difficult to find explanations about

Arogyavardhini vati before Rasaratna samuchchaya.

Rasayogasagara

Pandit Hariprapanna sharma author of Rasayoga sagara explained arogyavardhini vati with same reference explained in Rasaratna samuchchaya but with slight changes in doses. Instead of Rajakola phala in rasaratna samuchchaya he has mentioned Kshudrakola phala.

Rasamrita

Shri Yadavji trikamji in his Rasamrita18 and Siddha Yoga explained about Arogyavardhini vati as the best drug in pandu. He had also made comments on doses that is ‘tri gunja’(375 mg).

Bheshaja samhita

In Bheshaja Samhita two types of Arogyavardhini Vati has been explained– as Arogyavardhini Vati 19and Brihat Arogyavardhini Gutika and also one Arogyavardhani choorna in the same samhita. The original reference given for Arogyavardhani Gutika (AVG) is in Rasa Ratna Samuchchaya. But while explaining the proportions and procedures, modifications have been done with regard to proportions of Triphala, Shuddha Shilajatu, Shuddha Guggulu, Chitraka moola and Katuki. The size of the Vatis is said to be size of ‘Kshudra- badaraphala’ in contrast to the ‘Rajakolaphalapama’ in the shloka.

Based on the original reference only Vaidya Jeevaram Kalidas Vyas 20in 1965 published this formulation in Gujarati language modifying in the proportions and dosages. He had also considered the ‘Raja Kola Pramana’ as the dose of this Gutika and it was equal to 1 Tola. ‘Arogyavardhani churna’ (AVC) is availiable in Bheshaja

samhita. Original reference is from Rasoddhar Tantra (Medo roga). All the ingredients of Arogyavardhani Gutika is present except for Rasa and Gandhaka. The other ingredients are in different proportions. The Bhavana drava is ‘Nimbapatra Rasa’. The method of drying is said to be ‘dry in shade’. The main indication being Medo Roga. Dosage mentioned in ‘Nishkamatra’.

Thus it can be seen, that ‘Arogyavardhini’ formulation originally formulated before Rasa Ratna Samuchchaya of Rasa vagbhata of 13th – 14th cent AD. It can be seen in other present-day texts with modifications in proportions, dosage, indications etc. by retaining its original ingredients as it is.

  1. No doubt it is useful in many ways, but should be used judiciously, but not indiscriminately.

while using for a long term therapy, it needs to be used with caution, as bhasma is used.
shuddha bhama preparation should not be used at a stretch for more than 42 days.

    1. Hello, Doctor.

May I ask do you mean that once taken for a period of 42 days a break should be taken from the medicine and then restarted or do you mean only 42 days in total?

      Thank you,
      Sarah
